Look out big red (woods)!

We spent a couple of nights camping in the Redwoods of Northern California this last weekend.  The Coast Redwoods are an impressive sight to behold, they can be up to 380 feet tall and 26 feet in diameter.  We camped at the campground in Jedediah Smith State Park for two nights.  The campground itself is a bit of a maze, and with all the huge trees blocking the field of vision, we couldn't quite get our bearings and needed a map to find the bathrooms!

On the drive out we stopped to get cupcakes, 3 to be exact, from Divine Cupcakes. Not bad, even though they are vegan. Misty enjoyed the strawberry one and the peanut butter chocolate one. The mint is not repeatable. Friday night, we cooked up classic car camping eats, hot dogs cooked over an open fire and added some chili heated up on the camp stove, yum.  And to top it off (on both nights), gourmet s'mores... graham crackers, chocolate filled with caramels (set near the fire on the graham crackers to get melty), and marshmallows! Plus, thanks to ample cooler space and plenty of ice, we were able to have eggs and sausage with our pancakes on both Saturday and Sunday morning.  Ever since car camping with Jen, we always add a bit of smoked cheddar to the scrambled eggs.

On Saturday we hiked the Boy Scout Tree Trail that leaves from the unpaved Howland Hill Road a few miles to Boy Scout Tree, a monster of a double tree.  We unfortunately drove the longer part of the through road that is Howland Hill and at times thought it might become impassable to our lowly passenger car.  Nevertheless, we prevailed (and wisely drove out the shorter end of the road on our way out).  The trail itself is fairly flat overall, but with lots of up and down in between and makes for a pretty technical trail with lots of roots and rocks.  We ate our lunch (sandwiches, cheese and crackers) at the namesake tree and then continued on to Fern Falls at the end of the trail.

Saturday night was taco night (minus the salsa) and with the help of Fantastic World Foods Taco Filling, we managed a meat-like taco. It tasted good and had a nice texture, definitely something we would do again backpacking, just add water! We also managed a few games of Stratego and Yahtzee (thanks to K and L for their classic boxed versions).

Sunday, after breakfast, we took a leisurely drive up the coast and stopped in for a late lunch at Tony's Crabshack in Bandon, OR.  Thumbs up on their chowder and shrimp and crab cocktail. Also, there was a sign for cupcakes in Mapleton at a gas station. Uh, the sign for the cupcakes was better than the cupcakes...
