Despite not sleeping on the plane at all (5 screaming babies/children within a few rows, one kicking me from his mother's lap on the seat next to me, blowing raspberries, and taking stuff from my tray and throwing it on the floor,
we managed to get a good day of siteseeing and festival-taking-in in Juelich. The fall harvest festival was in full swing, and we had excellent food (currywurst and crepes) and fun stuff to watch. An exhibit at "
Der Kunstverein" by
Marianne Roetzel had these cool iron penguin type figures and others all around.
Later in the afternoon after a quick power nap, we decided to go see what the "zoo" on the Juelich map was all about. We found that the entire park area was fenced off and required a 4 euro fee to enter. We were skeptical, since all we could see was some playground equipment, but went ahead anyway.
We walked through the hedged gardens and checked out the walls of the old fort (citadel). They're cool brick bunkers that are full of tunnels, all lit up now with lights so you can explore. Towards the edge of the park we found the zoo which seemed to be mostly birds. At one end, there were a bunch of goats and turkeys, rabbits, and lots of peacocks. The animals ran around like they owned the place, many of them outside their fenced in areas.
After being shoed out by an old fellow on an electric moped (who didn't speak a word of English), we exited at the other end (the only one open) and walked along the West path. We saw more and more animals as we went, including some rather large wolves. Also nearby were a herd of elk with one bull who got rather loud and started false charges at people who went by near the fence. It was actually a bit scary since we weren't sure the fence would hold him.
We walked back through the festival area, picked up some more food (krakauer sausage, and tiny potatoes), and went to bed early. Oh, and Misty found a yarn store (or two)!

Rather interesting zoo. Glad you found some good food and especially a couple of yarn stores!
Children and second hand smoke are equally annoying as far as I am concerned. I guess that makes me a grumpy old man.
